Early Sunday 9/21/15 morning, Lisa was driving home from a wedding. She felt unsafe because she had a few drinks but was scared to stop on the side of the road. She thought the safest place would be in the police department parking lot, so she parked at the Homestead Florida police station. Officers soon arrived. They administered roadside tests because she had the car keys in her possession and that meant she had active control of the car, in other words, if she wanted to, she could have driven while drunk. They didn't care that she voluntarily parked there because she didn't want to drive. They arrested her. The Homestead officer then asked her to sign a consent to take the breathalyzer test and Miranda form. She told them she was learning disabled and didn't understand what the paper said, she needed it explained to her. Instead of advising her about the documents, the officers told her to "phone a friend" and call her husband. Unfortunately, I (her husband) was home asleep. She was afraid to sign it and told the officers that. Their reply was "no problem, we're just gonna put that you refuse." Then they searched her. My prescription of Percocet was in the car. Even though our last names are the same and she told them I was her husband, they impounded my medication and charged her with felony possession. Lisa sits in jail, waiting for her court date, all because she thought she would be safe in the police department parking lot. What is this world coming to? We are waiting for my retirement to be processed and currently have NO income. Even though she was arrested for both charges at the same time, she has 2 cases to deal with. We must hire 2 lawyers, pay 2 sets of court fees and fines, and try to get 2 not guilty verdicts! If you see the injustice here, please donate whatever you can. The average DUI case in 2015 cost about $15,000.00, and there's no telling what the drug case will cost us, probably more. Please help us. Don't let the police make a victim of a young woman who went to them for safety. Spread the word if you think this is WRONG!
