An Innocent and profoundly Deaf Mute was tried and wrongfully convicted of rape. The following is only a sampling of how the justice system turned a deaf ear to Deangelo Morris:
His Trial attorney never used an interpreter to communicate with him.—He was never asked “what happened”.
There was No DNA evidence to link him with the crime.
The medical examination of the alleged victim was Normal—No evidence of rape. But the medical report was not presented to the jury.
His Trial attorney never raised one objection during the trial—Not even to hearsay testimony from police officers that went to the ultimate issue of guilt.
Evidence of DeAngelo’s Alibi (that he was not even on the premises when the act occurred), was never investigated or presented to the jury.
The story of the alleged victim changed no less than three times.
No Interpreter—No Objections—No Defense—NO Justice!
This funding campaign is for my son DeAngelo Morris, a Deaf Mute.
DeAngelo is profoundly deaf as result of contracting Spinal meningitis when he was 18 months old.
Despite his disability DeAngelo, functions well. He married and has three children. He has his own car and had his own apartment. He is now divorced but has a wonderful long-term girlfriend, who he was with at the time of the alleged rape. (She tried to explain this to his Trial lawyer, who didn’t think it was important because, in her words, they had nothing).
DeAngelo is forty years old and has never been accused of sexually inappropriate behavior—Never! Not as a child, a teenager or as an adult. DeAngelo’s trial lawyer, who I paid, kept telling us we had nothing to worry about, he was not going to be convicted because there was no evidence. But despite not having evidence he was convicted and may spend 20 years in prison without your help. What is worse is that even after his release he will have to register as a sex offender for something he not only did not do—He never had a fair opportunity to defend himself. With any small donation you can offer DeAngelo can find the voice of justice and have a fair chance to be heard. In short, he can get a new trial. Anything you can offer will be appreciated. The funds will be used to fund DeAngelo’s legal defense, which begins with his appeals and subsequent new trial.
I hate crime as much as anyone, but let’s be real, people are wrongfully convicted every day*. Many of them spend years in prison before they are vindicated.
The deaf community is already invisible to the rest of society, don’t allow justice, which is blind, to become deaf and mute to the rights of the deaf community. Give what you can and pass this message on to as many as you can and ask that they give what they can as well.
Created by his mother and friends of Deangelo.
