I am Jim Sharkey, James T Sharkey's father. James has been incarcerated at the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas NV for over 5 months on a misdemeanor, domestic battery charge. He was locked up after refusing to plead guilty to a felony charge and asking for a jury trial to prove his innocence.
The court has assigned him two different attorneys to date. The first attorney didn't visit my son for over 4 months, didn't challenge or question why the District Attorney was charging him with a felony instead of a misdemeanor, or ask my son about any details regarding the incident. He was only interested in my son pleading guilty to a felony, one that my son says he is innocent of.
My son asked the judge for a new attorney and was assigned a Public Defender. I spoke to the new attorney, and he agreed that the charge should be either reduced or dismissed, that the District Attorney's case was weak and that my son should be released. But now that attorney has mysteriously recused himself from the case.
I posted his bail over two weeks ago, but now the court is asking for an additional $1940 to release him.
Two weeks ago, a guard at the detention center went into his cell at night, beat him and put him in a choke hold. Internal Affairs is investigating, but he needs to get out to be safe
