Justice for Derrick

My name is Doris; I am the voice for my son (Derrick) in these last moments to fight for his freedom. Even though he is an adult, he will always be my child. He is the youngest of three and who would have ever thought that life as he had known it to be would change in the blink of an eye.
From a very young age, we teach our children to protect one another. That is a choice that my son made in October 2003. Since then it has been a long road and he has been dealing with depression but I cannot allow my son to give up.  We’ve all heard the term “Life is what you make of it”. Unfortunately, that was not an option. The Law as it was written then did not apply to his case.
The mere fact that he was protecting himself and his family was not enough for the Courts. The “Stand your ground law” was not passed until years later. Someone else’s negligence and their actions changed his life.
As a loving parent and with the support of family we were able to get legal representation in the beginning. We exhausted all finances and resources to just end up with an Attorney that failed at his job. Derrick was on house arrest for almost four years before his trial began. Within those years he was offered a 5 year plea if he admitted to being guilty of his charges. My son has always shown a tremendous amount of strength and courage, and he was just certain that he would be found “not guilty” by a Jury.
Again, his Attorney failed him. He was instructed by his Attorney not to take the stand. No witnesses were called on behalf of my son even though the State had subpoenaed several witnesses.  For better or worse, we all face a variety of tests in our lives, and I’m confident that with God on our side this too shall pass. There is a light at the end of this dark tunnel. His children need him and we are asking for much needed help. May God continue to bless us and guide our steps.
