We are trying to raise funds for Michael Armendariz (the rap artist, "Esé Spook") in order to hire a lawyer for co-counsel in a habeas corpus case.
Why should you care? Because what happened to him could happen to you. He was at a bar with friends celebrating the engagement of his best friend from childhood. They were more brothers than friends. They decided it was time to leave and were in the parking lot when the two of them were attacked by about 6 people. They didn’t know who these people were or why they were being attacked, but it was becoming clear that they weren’t going to stop until Michael’s friend was dead. They were holding Michael down but he finally got away and tried without success to pull the main aggressor off of his friend. Shots were fired, the man went down. He died. Michael didn’t have any idea, but it turned out that the men who attacked them were law enforcement officers.
From there, the law enforcement agencies involved used every trick in the book to send Michael to prison. They destroyed evidence, planted evidence, didn’t collect evidence that didn’t show the officers in a good light, and gave him a public defender whose main mission was to get the case over with, not to represent Michael. He was sentenced to 43 years, of which he has served 13 as of now. We are trying to right this wrong and get Michael the trial he deserves.
